| Convention 2009 |
The American Annual State Convention was held October the 16,17,& 18 at the Ramada Columbia Inn on Two Notch Road in Columbia, S.C.
On Friday night there was a Greet and Meet time with finger foods being served. At around 8:00 P.M., we starting playing bingo with Mr. Bingo.
On Saturday Morning the meeting started at 9:00 o'clock.It was called to order by Betty Jones, State President. Prayer was offered by Richard Hatcher.Then the speakers came.
The first speaker was Cornelia Pelzer, Association for the Blind, Charleston, S.C. She gave two helpful hints at the end of her speech that could be helpful to all of us. They were put the calender of events for each chapter on the website. Another one was to have speakers to come to your chapter meetings. She gave others which made her speech very interested.
The Second Speaker wasCommissioner Jim Kirby from the Commission of the Blind in Columbia,S.C,. He thanked the ACB for the united effort to help the S.C. Commision of the Blind to stay a seperate agency and maintain rehabelitation Program. In his speech he talked
about the cut in the budget. He gave us an insight on how the Commision got their funding. Many more things were talked about but in the end he made the statement "If you have the right tools you can do anything.
The next speaker was Pam Davenport, S.C. State Library, Columbia, S.C, She told us that they had got in 500 of the degital machines. She also said that there was around 1,000 on the waiting list. She said that there were downsizes of the staff, but no interruption of services.
The next speaker was Gwen Gillenwatersm from the Disability Resource Center in Charleston, S.C. She made the statement that there are 3 centers within the State, 300 centers throughout the country. She gave us some ideas of what services are offered by this agency. Some of these was; advocacy systems and individual, Peer Support, IL Skills training and information and referral.
The Last speaker was Fred Key, Independent Contractor for
Assistive Technology in Columbia, S.C. Some of the things he dicuss were: Learning disability is the largest disability group, Population of hard of hearing needs services. One of the last points he made was "Be for someone that has a need."
After all of the speakers had spoken, the changes in the Constitution and By-laws were read by Richard Hatcher.
Richard Hatcher read the slate of officers that the nominating committee had given they where as following; President Betty Jones,1st Vice-President Nia Green,2nd vice -President Susan Jones, Treasurer Bette Kane, Secretary Mary Ellen Thoma.After that we were adjoined. Everyone was served finger food.
The Banquet was held at 6:30 Saturday night. It was call to order by Betty Jones, State Presiden. Richard Hatcher was asked to lead us in prayer. After that we had a very remarkable meal. After that Bette Kane was ask to give out the awards.--Billy Ewin recieved the Marvin S. Lowe award. Barbara Mattson recieved the Rev. Archie D. Croft award. Rob Fowler recieved the President's award. Fred Key recieved the Professional of the year award.
The sp[eaker for the night was Jennifer Basier, Commission of the Blind. She gave a very interesting speech about how she had come through many struggles and hardship but she hd overcome them and was a huge success in the end. She accredited her sucess with the help of family and God.
On Sunday Morning the Business Metting started at 8:30 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Betty Jones,State President. She ask Richard Hatcher to lead us in a word of Pray.The Secretary report was given and it was accepted. The Treasury report was given. The following is what we have in our accounts: Marvin S. Lowe-$2,472.53
Ellen Beach Mack $11,176.36, The ACB Operating account- $1,937.08. The Treasury report was accepted. She also said that their was 33 at the Banquet.
Their was no old business so we went into new business. It was discussed that we have the State Convention in Columbia at the Remada Inn for the next two year if we could get good rates. That the hospitability room would rotate between the chapters. This was approved.
Richard Hatcher was ask to come forward and go over the Constitution and By-laws and vote on them. The following changes had been recommend by the Committee. Change the spelling of Treasury to Treasurer; change number to numbered; change by-law to by-laws. Motion was made and second and passed. It was also recommend that the dues be change from $12.00 to $15.00 this passed also. It was voted on to add a Publicity committee to the by-laws. This was passed.
The Montary Primary Accounts was brought to the floor by Larry Rogers. Then there was a discussion. It was stated tha Mack Nettle was there when the accounts was set up. He said that the Ellen Beach Mack Account was to always keep $10,000 dollars in it. That the interest would go on Scholarships for visually impaired or Blind students. If the money was not used for Scholarships it would then go back to the Columbia Chapter. the Marvin S. Lowe account was to always keep $2,000 in it. The interest off of the account would be use to help needy people.
Richard Hatcher was ask to have the election since we was going to elect officers. Betty Jones was put up by the nominating committtee. Richard Brugamman was nominating from the floor.It was voted on Betty Jones won. The1st vice-President was put up by the nominating committees she was Nia Green. One was nominating from the floor was Derrick Middleton. Derrick Middleton won. 2nd vice-President was put up by the nominating commmittees she was Susan Jones. Susan Jones won. Secretary was put up by the nominating committee was Mary Ellen Thoma. She won. Treasurer was put up by the nominating was Bette Kane. She won. Barbara Mattson went off the Board as a board member to be a repsentative for the Spartanburg Chapter. Then we elected a Board member. Nia Green was asked but decline. Mrs. Monnie Chalker was put up from the floor. She won.
This concluded our week-end of the American Council of the Blind of South Carolina annual State convention.
